Butterfly Splitfin Goodied (Ameca splendens)

Description

Ameca Splendens, also known as the Butterfly Goodeid, is a beautiful and relatively rare livebearer fish native to Mexico. Here are some key points to consider when keeping Ameca Splendens in an aquarium:

  1. Temperature: They prefer a temperature range of 68°F to 75°F (20°C to 24°C). It's crucial to maintain a stable temperature within this range to ensure their well-being.

  2. Minimum Tank Size: A tank size of at least 30 gallons (113 liters) is recommended for a small group of Ameca Splendens. They are active swimmers and require a larger tank with ample swimming space.

Fish Type and Category: Ameca Splendens belong to the Goodeidae family, which includes various livebearer species found in Mexico. They are known for their vibrant appearance and interesting behavior.

Feeding Habits: They are omnivores and will readily accept high-quality flake foods, as well as live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Providing a varied diet will help ensure their overall health and vitality.

Habitat Preference: In their natural habitat, Ameca Splendens can be found in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams with a substrate of rocks, gravel, and sand. They are known to inhabit areas with plenty of vegetation and cover.

Water pH Level: They prefer slightly alkaline water conditions, with a pH level ranging from 7.2 to 8.2. Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial for their overall health and well-being.

Behavior: Ameca Splendens are generally peaceful fish but can display some aggression, particularly during breeding or in confined spaces. Providing ample hiding spots and breaking lines of sight with decorations can help alleviate aggressive behavior.

They are best kept in small groups of at least 3 to 5 individuals, as they are social and tend to thrive in the company of their own kind.

They are active swimmers and tend to occupy the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. However, they may occasionally explore the bottom regions.

Be sure to provide a well-filtered and well-maintained aquarium, with regular water changes and adequate hiding places to ensure the well-being and comfort of your Ameca Splendens.
