Xenomystus nigri, commonly known as the African Knifefish, belongs to the family Notopteridae. Here are some interesting facts about this aquatic creature:

  1. Distribution: Xenomystus nigri has a diffuse natural distribution covering parts of Nigeria, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Chad, Liberia, Gabon, Togo, Sudan, Benin, Sierra Leone, and Angola. Habitat: These knifefish are often found in still, overgrown waters. Their sizeable natural range and various biological adaptations suggest they can survive under a wide range of conditions. They adapst very well to captivity and are relatively easy to care for.

  2.  Size : Xenomystus Nigri can reach a maximum size of 12" however 8" is typical for a captive raised specimen. 
  3. Aquarium Requirements: To house one of these knifefish comfortably, an aquarium measuring approximately 48″ x 18″ x 15″ (120 cm x 45 cm x 37.5 cm) with a capacity of 200 liters is recommended. The tank should ideally contain areas of dense planting, dim lighting, and cover for the fish. Soft sand substrate, dried leaves, and peat fiber create an authentic environment. 

  4. Diet: Like all Notopterids, Xenomystus nigri is primarily carnivorous. It readily accepts meaty live and frozen foods, including bloodworms, prawns, chopped mussels, and earthworms.

  5. Behavior and Compatibility: Avoid keeping them with fish small enough to be considered food. Suitable tankmates include medium-sized peaceful cichlids, , and larger catfish such, adults become very territorial so a larger aquarium for a group is essential.
