Ornate Rainbowfish (Rhadinocentrus ornatus)

Description

Ornate Rainbowfish (Rhadinocentrus ornatus) is a captivating freshwater fish native to coastal regions and sandy offshore islands in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia. Let’s dive into some intriguing details about this delightful aquatic species:
  1. Habitat and Distribution:

    • The Ornate Rainbowfish thrives in the coastal ‘wallum’ habitats of eastern Australia.
    • These habitats are characterized by soft, acidic, and often tannin-stained water.
    • Originally collected from Moreton Island, a sand dune island off the Queensland coast in Moreton Bay, they were described by Charles Tate Regan in 1914.
    • They are the only known species within the genus Rhadinocentrus.
    • In earlier times, they were commonly known as the ‘Moreton Island Sunfish’ and were popular among early native fish enthusiasts.
  2. Color Variation:

    • Ornate Rainbowfish exhibit considerable color variation across their geographical range.
    • Generally, their body is semi-transparent with two rows of black scales in the mid-lateral region.
    • The iridescent scales below the dorsal fin and above the lateral line can be either red or metallic pale blue.
    • The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are generally blue (sometimes red) with black edges.
    • Some even display unique colour polymorphisms, such as blue and red individuals.
  3. Aquarium Considerations:

    • For aquarium enthusiasts, the Ornate Rainbowfish is a popular choice.
    • Provide hiding places, such as clay pots or caves, and maintain water conditions similar to their natural habitat.
    • Their small size and vibrant colors make them an appealing addition to freshwater tanks.
