Penguin Tetra (Thayeria obliqua)
Description
Description
The Penguin Tetra (Thayeria boehlkei) is a peaceful and schooling fish native to South America. Here are some important considerations for their care:
-
Temperature: Penguin Tetras prefer a tropical environment with a water temperature ranging between 72°F and 82°F (22°C to 28°C). Maintaining a stable temperature within this range is essential for their health and well-being.
-
Minimum Tank Size: These fish are relatively small, but they do best in a spacious aquarium to accommodate their schooling nature. It is recommended to keep them in a tank that is at least 20 gallons (75.7 liters) in size. A larger tank is beneficial if you plan to keep a school of these fish, as they are known to thrive in groups.
Tank Details:
- Water Quality: Penguin Tetras are sensitive to changes in water quality. It is crucial to maintain a well-established filtration system and conduct regular water tests to ensure optimal conditions.
- Tank Setup: Incorporate plenty of live plants and driftwood in the aquarium to simulate their natural habitat. A dimly lit tank with areas for hiding is also beneficial, as these fish can be shy and easily stressed in bright, open spaces.
- Tank Mates: These tetras are peaceful and can coexist with other peaceful fish of similar size, such as other tetras, rasboras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or larger fish that may intimidate or prey on them.
- Water Parameters: Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH level between 6.0 and 7.5, and ensure that the water hardness remains within the range of 5 to 12 dKH.
By providing a suitable environment and meeting their specific care requirements, you can ensure that your Penguin Tetras remain healthy, active, and vibrant in your aquarium.
