Longfin Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya)

Description

The Longfin Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya) is a delightful freshwater fish that adds a splash of brilliance to any aquarium. Let’s explore its fascinating features:

  1. Appearance: These barbs exhibit vibrant red coloration, making them eye-catching in any tank. Their anal and pectoral fins are moderately sized, and they have a forked caudal fin that is symmetrical on the top and bottom. Each fin is slightly translucent, with females having clearer fins than males. When fully grown can reach a maximum size of 2"

  2. Origin: These tropical fish hail from Sri Lanka, although there have been reports of them being found in parts of Southern India, Columbia, and Mexico (with some even reaching Panama). Humans likely introduced them to these regions, where they adapted well.

  3. Lifespan: With proper care, Longfin Cherry Barbs can live between 5 and 7 years, although some dedicated owners have even reached the 8-year mark. Ensuring optimal water conditions, habitat set up, and compatible tank mates is essential for longevity.

  4. Tank Setup: To showcase their vivid colors, provide a well-furnished aquarium with live plants. Consider a soft, sandy substrate, wood roots, and branches for plenty of shady spots. Dried leaf litter adds a natural touch. A tank with base dimensions of 75 cm x 30 cm or equivalent is suitable. Don’t forget a good filtration system! 🌊🌱

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced aquarist, the Longfin Cherry Barb will bring joy and vibrancy to your aquatic world! 🐡🌟
