Melon Barb (Haludaria Faciatus)

Description

The Melon Barb, scientifically known as Haludaria fasciata (previously Puntius fasciatus), is a peaceful and popular freshwater fish species originating from Sri Lanka and India. Known for its vibrant coloration and peaceful demeanor, the Melon Barb is a favorite among aquarists, especially those with community aquariums.

  1. Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Melon Barbs is between 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C). Maintaining the water within this range helps ensure the fish remain healthy and active.

  2. Minimum Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 30 gallons (113 liters) is recommended for a small school of Melon Barbs. Providing sufficient space is crucial to accommodate their active swimming behavior and ensure a healthy environment.

In terms of care, Melon Barbs are relatively undemanding. They appreciate a well-planted aquarium with open spaces for swimming. They are omnivorous and will readily accept a varied diet, including high-quality flake or pellet foods, as well as live or frozen options such as bloodworms and brine shrimp.

These fish are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive species in a community tank setting. However, providing adequate space and vegetation helps alleviate any potential territorial behavior. Regular water changes and maintenance are necessary to ensure optimal water quality and a healthy environment for the Melon Barbs.
