Dawn Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eos)

Description

The Dawn Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eos) is a captivating fish species that hails from British Guiana. Let’s delve into the enchanting details of this aquatic gem:

  1. Appearance and Coloration:

    • The Dawn Tetra exhibits a warm gold to coppery-bronze body with an overtone of red or orange. Its back is darker, while the belly shimmers like mother-of-pearl.
    • Numerous tiny spots adorn its body, subtly darkening the overall color.
    • The gill covers reflect a stunning flash of metallic blue-green.
    • The male, more brilliantly colored, is also smaller and slimmer than the female.
    • These adult fish typically reach a length of about 1.75 inches.
  2. Breeding and Meaning of “Eos”:

    • The Dawn Tetra breeds similarly to other small characins.
    • Interestingly, the word “eos” refers to the Greek goddess of dawn, reflecting its rosy hues.
  3. Aquarium Care:

    • Opt for a spacious tank with sandy or rocky substrate.
    • Maintain water parameters:
      • Temperature: 74-80°F
      • pH: 7.0 – 7.8
      • Hardness: 2° – 12° dH
  4. Community and Tank Mates:

    • Dawn Tetras are peaceful and coexist well with other non-aggressive fish.
    • Consider keeping them in a harmonious community.
