Red Dwarf Rasbora (Microrasbora rubecens)

Etymology:

• The genus name, Microrasbora, combines the Ancient Greek words “mikrós” (meaning ‘small’) and the generic name Rasbora, alluding to the small size of this genus and its superficial similarity to the Rasbora grouping.
• The specific epithet, rubescens, stems from the Latin word meaning ‘reddish,’ referring to the orange-scarlet flanks, ventral surface of the head, caudal, anal, and sometimes dorsal fins.

Distribution and Habitat:

• The Red Dwarf Rasbora is endemic to the isolated mountain lake of Inlé and its surrounding watershed in Shan State, eastern Myanmar.
• Lake Inlé lies in a karstic valley nearly 900 meters above sea level on the Shan Plateau. It is famed for its stilted villages and local fishermen known as Intha, who row their boats using only one leg.
• The water is clear, shallow (2-3 meters deep in most places), and has a fertile, loamy substrate. It can be muddy and turbid around the margins.
• The lake is home to many endemic animals, including nine species of fish and numerous gastropods.

Appearance and Size:  The Red Dwarf Rasbora reaches a maximum standard length of 25-30 mm. Its body exhibits hues of crimson, shimmering gold, and iridescent turquoise, creating a mesmerizing spectacle in any aquarium setup.

Aquarium Care:

• For aquarium enthusiasts, this species is an excellent choice.
• Maintain a densely planted tank with gentle filtration.
• Floating plants and driftwood roots or branches to diffuse light are appreciated.
• Base dimensions of 60 cm x 30 cm or equivalent are recommended.
